Artists Statement
Votive offerings in the classical world were dedicated to
deities. It was a hostile world, where dark forces were always present, so the
dedication of these offerings was important in keeping those elements at bay.
Today, votive offerings in the Christian Churches are direct descendants from
the classical world.
You can now buy the appropriate votive offering to match your need and dedicate
it to the saint that has the power to heal or make the wish come true.
This work, Wish List, was informed by a visit to Italy and Greece in 2003 where
there were many votive offerings for sale in small shops and in the churches …
they were very charming images and I was intrigued by their importance in the
lives and the dreams of many people today.
