Artists Statement
When does a dream turn
into a nightmare? It might happen as you are flying south on your yearly
migration, when, for no explainable reason, your group, losing its way, flies
down a chimney into the cookstove of an abandoned home. Suddenly and without
warning, as escape becomes impossible, it is there that your dreams end with
your death.
However you are reborn years later when an artist fortuitously finds your
remains and recognizes your sorrow, dignity and value. To her, your bones
represent loss in all its many forms. She makes paintings, drawings and
photographs of your tangled body and those of your imprisoned companions. Using
images from these sources, she creates her dream of an imagined civilization in
which you may have existed. With gathered treasures as well as gifts from
friends who recognize her dream, she creates artifacts, books and objects for
and about you. The Red Box is one such piece.
The artist knows that the death of twenty-nine Flickers became a means for her
to overcome some nightmares of her own.
A flicker is type of
woodpecker (bird) found in Canada and USA.
