Agatha Doerksen - Artist

Agatha DoerksenAs a 1st generation Canadian growing up on the prairies, I took delight in creating my own personal mythology – largely imagined and embellished.  In part, because my Mennonite immigrant parents thought it best to focus on a new life in a new land rather than tell and re-tell their sad stories as refugees.  My imagination blossomed and early memory was never fed.

Much of my adult life has been spent living, working and travelling in Mexico, India, parts of Asia and Africa … sometimes as pilgrim seeking the holy grail, times as development worker trying to live ethically and with compassion, times as nomad seeking detachment and times to earn money.  Perhaps the desire to travel and breathe-in other cultures and places was driven by a search for a tribal memory lost and hidden by my Mennonite ancestors in their flight for freedom.

In my 40’s I immersed myself in my art practice full time.  Mixing clay, glass, feathers, paper, metal with paint – my medium of choice, I like to create large-scale works on canvas and as installation projects.  My work of redemption is to collect and document what may otherwise be lost in conscious memory and never considered.  I embrace the sacredness of my role as an artist in society, to remember, reflect and interpret, and in my research I aspire to see beyond what is visible and scripted to the image-ing of fresh possibilities.

Currently I live and do my work from my studio in Düsseldorf, Germany - always gathering, always dreaming … for each new day is part of the journey, the process, the becoming.
