Installation Instructions for Australian Works

Helen Sanderson (Curator)

Give me a home among the gum trees

Materials Wooden stretcher with cotton canvas, gesso, acrylic paint, ink & found objects:  2 Australian pennies;    wooden box, printed papers.
Dimensions 220mm /  7/8"   x 230mm / 9”
Box 350mm / 1 3/8" x 278mm / 13”
Weight 1 kilo /  2lbs

The art work is stored in a small wooden traveling crate/box.  The crate/box has six screws that require a Phillips head screwdriver for opening and closing.   The work itself is a simple painted canvas that is hung onto a hook or the gallery hanging system.  The crate has been made so that it can be exhibited with the work…showing the places the crate has been posted from and to.  It can be shown or not according to each gallery director’s discretion, it is not vital to the integrity of the work.  However, it is a significant part of the plan for the In Your Dreams project.   The crate/box could be placed on a plinth below the work, or laid on the floor below the work.  There will be a small amount of padding within the crate/box that could be stored within the crate during the exhibition.  I do not mind if the crate/box is handled during the exhibition by viewers.

Wish List

Materials

recycled tin cans, wire mesh, wire, composite wooden box, printed paper with information about votive offerings on the inside.

Dimensions h 171 cm x w 9.5 cm x d .5 cm    or
h 6’1” x 3.75” x 2/10”
Box h 15.2 cm x w 23 cm x d 23 cm    or
h  6” x w 9” x d 9”

The narrow strip is hung from a D ring on the back of the top piece of cardboard. It may be necessary to put some blue tac at the bottom as after being wound up in the box it can have a bit of an outward swing!
I have had the box propped up against the floor and wall but it could also come out of the box depending on the space in the gallery.

Book of the Deep

Materials

linocut on organza in acrylic box

Dimensions Size:     4.5 x 19 x 19 cm
Box
Weight

The piece with its box weighs 220 grams. The packaging for postage weighs another approx. 300 grams.

Total 520 grams.

Place the book against its box on a white plinth or white shelf. Arrange the book and its pages as shown in the image. The book may be handled with clean hands. Gloves make it too difficult to turn the pages. Handling should be very gentle as there is a tendency for the pages to fray with inappropriate touch or a lot of handling. If there are to be very many visitors who are likely to want to touch work, I would prefer the book not to be handled and, if possible, for it to be placed under glass.  Thank you for your care.

‘In Your Dreams’ is an artists book of 8 images of etching and aquatint (all 20x20cm in size) printed on Arches paper. The concertina style of the book allows it to be  displayed fully open and expanded on a long shelf or plinth. The book will travel in a leather- bound box fitted with a lid, with the title embossed on its lid. This box is to be displayed next to the opened book on the shelf.

This book should be handled with white gloves by the gallery staff when installing the work. Once installed, opened out and extended, it would be preferable for it to be labelled 'do not touch'' or put into a glass box.

This work is interactive and the drawer can be opened and is encouraged as viewer interaction is sought by opening the drawer, rolling paper pieces, and writing words that relate to participation and connection. These are seen as links and are placed back in the drawer to accumulate and for others to reflect on.

  • Please click here to read the instructions for removing and packing the work.

  • The lid is taken off the box  (NB the draw in the lid and the shelves in the box will easily slide out if tilted forward)

  • Ideally the work to be placed on two plinths of varied heights, the box on the taller (eye level) and the lid on the smaller plinth or alternatively one plinth large enough to contain both lid and box.

  • The plinth situated so it can be viewed 360% (walked around)

  • NB  The shelves do slide out should the paper pieces have been displaced during transit and need restoring back into holes.
